Sony confirmed that development of the next-generation PlayStation platform is proceeding as planned, with related work to continue in the next fiscal year starting April 2027. Meanwhile, cumulative PS5 sales have reached 97.9 million units.
Sony CFO Lin Tao stated that the PS5 is in the current stage of its console lifecycle, with new unit sales gradually declining as expected, but the PlayStation platform continues to expand steadily. The company plans to enhance user engagement and monetization through its game lineup and service businesses, while continuing preparations for the next-generation platform.
In the three months ended September 30, Sony sold 2.6 million PS5 units. During the same period, game business sales increased by 9% year-on-year, operating profit rose by 89%, and monthly active users reached 127 million in September. Sony also raised its sales and operating profit forecasts for the game business, citing growth in first-party and third-party game sales as well as cost improvements.
Facing rising costs for components such as memory, Sony has coordinated with suppliers to secure the necessary memory volume for projected sales in the next fiscal year, and plans to respond through promotions, pricing adjustments, and further cost reductions.
Sony has not yet announced or decided on a release date for the PlayStation 6. The 2028 window mentioned by outsiders is merely an expectation from some analysts and not an official schedule.
