Eiji Aonuma stated that the project went through multiple rounds of discussion and preparation, making it difficult to pinpoint the exact moment the team decided on the current approach for the remake. However, he recalled that after the development of Tears of the Kingdom concluded, some developers began shifting to other projects, and work on the Ocarina of Time remake commenced during this phase.

As the series' 40th anniversary approached, the team was discussing which title would be most suitable for the celebration. After reviewing the series' history, they concluded that Ocarina of Time was not only the starting point for many players but also marked the beginning of Eiji Aonuma's own career working on the franchise.

Eiji Aonuma also hoped to observe how Nintendo's younger generation of developers would reinterpret this classic title for a new audience.
