Recently, the domestic AAA action masterpiece "Return to Tang" featured on the cover of issue 427 of the British video game magazine EDGE. The magazine arranged a 13-page in-depth feature and conducted an exclusive interview with the game's Executive Producer and Creative Director, Gu Xingyan.
Set in Hexi Shazhou after the An Lushan Rebellion, "Return to Tang" tells the story of a commoner father and son risking their lives to deliver a secret letter to the Tang Dynasty. The creators state that the core of their creation is dynamic cinematic storytelling, abandoning stiff, fixed cutscenes in favor of naturally advancing the plot through scene interactions and character actions. It carries grand Tang Dynasty history from the perspective of nameless ordinary people, distinguishing itself from traditional epic narratives.
The combat focuses on realistic, life-or-death melee encounters, without flashy martial arts moves, recreating the desperate confrontation feel of realistic action films. Each encounter has extremely low margin for error, requiring players to counter moves and win through hardship, highlighting the brutal reality of the chaotic battlefield. The art fully restores the landscapes of the Dunhuang Gobi and ancient Western Regions cities, with extremely high precision in character and scene details.
"Return to Tang" will launch on PC, PS5, and XSX|S. The official release date has not yet been announced.
