According to recent reports from Japanese media outlets such as Nippon TV News 24, Tokyo police have arrested a woman for placing online orders totaling over 4.3 billion yen worth of Naruto and One Piece merchandise, only to cancel all of them afterward. The police decided to arrest her on suspicion of obstructing the normal business operations of Shueisha, the anime publisher.
Reports indicate that between 2024 and 2025, the woman placed over 2,000 orders on an online store using 238 different fake accounts. She then canceled the orders after the items had been shipped but without making any payments. Since these orders were cash-on-delivery, her cancellations resulted in a large number of unclaimed packages. The total value of these canceled orders exceeded 4.3 billion yen, causing Shueisha to incur losses of approximately 7.5 million yen (including shipping costs).
The woman has currently admitted to these allegations, stating, "I really love anime, so placing these orders fulfilled that desire." She also claimed that this shopping spree for anime products helped her relieve daily stress.
