Although Nintendo is a renowned international brand, its business development in India has been stagnant. Since the release of the Wii in 2011, Nintendo has not officially launched any home consoles or handheld devices in India. Perhaps due to this long period of absence in the market, combined with the global popularity of Nintendo games, some savvy individuals in India began to consider creating their own version of "Nintendo."
In 2022, a company named "Nintendo India Private Limited" was officially established. Not only did it pass approval processes unusually smoothly, but it also led some people to believe it was an official branch of Nintendo... However, in reality, this company did not engage in any game-related activities; instead, it was a real estate firm. Possibly due to their own "guilty conscience," the company remained extremely low-profile for four years after its establishment, doing nothing except misleading people into thinking they were Nintendo's Indian subsidiary.
However, deception could not escape the eyes of the "strongest legal department in the Eastern Hemisphere." In February this year, Nintendo Japan officially filed a lawsuit against "Nintendo India" for trademark infringement, submitting substantial evidence primarily demonstrating the global influence and brand recognition of the name "Nintendo." The official statement indicated that "Nintendo" is virtually synonymous with gaming, whereas "Nintendo India" operated in the real estate sector, which could easily cause confusion and infringe upon Nintendo's trademark rights.
Ultimately, the Delhi High Court in India ruled that Nintendo India Private Limited had infringed on Nintendo's copyright. The court ordered the company to immediately cease using the name, and the company agreed without objection to stop the infringement and accept the court's ruling. They also claimed that they "had never used the name for commercial purposes."
