Recently, foreign media outlet IGN released a behind-the-scenes interview video for "Phantom Blade Zero," revealing development details with Donnie Yen as a core co-creator. The game will launch on PS5/PC on October 29. A dedicated State of Play event will be livestreamed at 10:00 AM (Beijing Time) on August 18, featuring nearly 20 minutes of new gameplay footage, unveiling several key new story characters, and showcasing core gameplay systems such as free-form build customization across multiple styles and differentiated combat approaches.
Since 2023, Donnie Yen has been deeply involved in the game's full production process. He not only completed facial and full-body motion capture for the core character Mo Yuan but also led the Yen Family Stunt Team in refining the entire Chinese kung fu combat system, integrating Hong Kong martial arts film design concepts into the game. The memorable infant protection scene in the trailer was significantly revised at Donnie Yen's suggestion. The original design simply had the infant protagonist Hun securely carried on Mo Yuan's back, resulting in flat and tension-less combat.
Drawing on years of experience in film and television action choreography, Donnie Yen proposed a scene where the infant Hun is sent flying amidst chaotic combat. Mo Yuan catches the baby mid-air while parrying enemies,稳稳 cradling him on his sword blade. This sequence balances thrilling combat, father-son emotion, and character development. During motion capture, the team repeatedly adjusted filming with wire rigs, with Donnie Yen personally demonstrating positioning and combat rhythm throughout. He stated that action design should not only pursue visual excitement but also enhance narrative impact, using cinematic storytelling logic to enrich the game's segments.
The creative team stated that this collaboration was not merely a celebrity endorsement. Both sides continuously communicated and refined action design and narrative performance, adapting traditional kung fu film expression techniques to modern action games.
