The Marvel Rivals community has erupted in controversy over Storm's new swimsuit skin, "Wave Rider." What should have been a joyful moment for fans turned into accusations of racism due to the skin's rarity.
Storm "Wave Rider" Gameplay:
The skin's Epic rarity sparked intense backlash from the community. Players pointed out that it is the only Epic-tier female summer skin in the current series, while other female characters received Legendary skins with additional color schemes, effects, and accessories. One of the top comments on the official post read: "The first Epic summer skin, and it went to the game's only Black woman."
Marvel Rivals responded quickly, acknowledging player dissatisfaction and stating that they had listened to community feedback. The company decided to upgrade the skin from Epic to Legendary, with no additional cost for players who had already purchased it. The skin will also receive new lobby animations and updated MVP animations, while maintaining its current price. Officials also promised that Storm will receive a new Legendary skin within the year.
Additionally, NetEase specifically requested that players not cross the line. The company emphasized that while it understands the community's strong reaction, insults and cyberbullying directed at employees and moderators are unacceptable.
