Foreign Media Journalist Criticizes Sexual Orientation in Fire Emblem: Engage, Asking Why Men Only Like Women

A Polygon journalist noticed a point of frustration while trying out the new entry in Nintendo's tactical RPG series, Fire Emblem Engage. In the information cards for recruitable characters, the preferences of most male units surprisingly listed things like liking women.

In the article, the journalist wrote: "The only thing that's annoying is this strange and deliberate insistence on emphasizing that the men in Engage like women. When you open the info for recruitable characters, most of the men have 'Women / Flirting with Women / Pretty Women / Flirting with Women' or something similar listed as their preferences."

The journalist pointed out that the Fire Emblem series has always been somewhat "regressive" in acknowledging non-traditional sexual orientations among its characters, but this instance seems particularly absurd. However, the journalist highly praised Engage in other aspects, noting improvements to the combat system, solid character development, and an ambitious storyline. The game will be released exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2 on September 17.
