ZUN, the creator of the Touhou Project series, announced on August 13 via the "Touhou Housouzan News" website that pricing for mainline games and music CDs would be adjusted. All Touhou games sold officially at events will be priced at 1,500 yen (approximately 63.49 RMB), while the retail price will be adjusted to 1,600 yen (approximately 67.73 RMB) starting September 1, 2026. These adjustments appear to apply only to physical copies, so it remains unclear whether prices on Steam will be affected.
On social media, ZUN told players, "I've kept the same price all along, but I was told that we've reached our limit in terms of production costs." In response, Japanese Touhou fans seem to generally agree that these games were already excessively cheap from the start, and the new prices remain very low. Many players don't seem eager to rush out and buy Touhou titles they don't yet own before the new prices take effect; instead, they seem more willing to repurchase their favorite works at the new price as a show of support for the series.
It's worth mentioning that the first Windows game in the Touhou Project series, "Touhou Koumakyou ~ The Embodiment of Scarlet Devil," will receive an official remake and launch on Steam, Nintendo Switch, and PS5 on September 10.
