The id Tech engine was used to develop the Doom series and MachineGames' Indiana Jones. According to Marty Stratton, Executive Producer at id Software, they will not abandon their self-developed id Tech engine in favor of Unreal Engine 5, as they remain "fully committed" to it.
Marty Stratton told the outlet Windows Central, "We are fully committed to the id Tech engine; we are not switching to Unreal Engine. Yesterday, we had a meeting with five or six technical directors. Sometimes I wish everyone could have attended that meeting to feel the excitement surrounding these technologies. I don't think people need to worry; we will continue to maintain our technological lead."
Although id Software will continue developing its powerful id Tech engine, the future of the Doom series developer remains challenging. While the studio gained confidence from the player community during QuakeCon, Stratton emphasized that id Software's future, and ultimately its viability, will depend on what they can finally deliver.
"The ultimate measure lies in how we move forward, what we can deliver to our fans, and whether it meets expectations. We approach every project with this philosophy, and we apply the same mindset to our upcoming work."
Despite significant downsizing due to layoffs, Marty Stratton remains confident about the future, drawing on his 26 years of industry experience.
"When I first joined, we had only 12 people. We completed Doom 3 with 19 people. I know that was a long time ago, and it was an old game. Times have changed, and we have undergone many transformations, but each development project is unique, blending different personnel, technical capabilities, and design philosophies. I firmly believe our team has the ability to create amazing works in the future."
