Fable 4 New Gameplay Demo: Ugly Female Protagonist Isn't the Biggest Issue

Recently, a new gameplay demo for Fable 4 was released, showcasing the game's hybrid combat system combining melee, archery, and magic. The latest version features adjustments and optimizations to the female protagonist's facial model, making her features more appealing, but combat has become the focal point of player discussion.

Gameplay Demo:

Players can seamlessly switch between melee sword fighting, ranged shooting, and spellcasting, while retaining the series' iconic humorous magic, such as turning enemies into chickens. However, many players have criticized the combat performance: weak impact feedback, insufficient limb reactions when enemies are hit, and a lack of visual details like wounds or blood, leading some to joke that it feels like chopping plastic mannequins. Character movement suffers from a sliding sensation, and animation transitions feel stiff. Others pointed out that enemy AI is overly simplistic, making the combat framework feel outdated. While many believe character facial models could still be polished, overhauling the underlying combat system would be far more challenging.

Beyond combat, Fable 4 retains the series' signature features: moral choices that shape the world and NPC attitudes, along with the ability to buy property and start a family. The game features a hub-based open world, with the main story lasting approximately 15–20 hours, and full completion including all side quests and exploration taking around 40 hours.
