Following Sony's earlier tests of dynamic pricing for game discounts this year, Microsoft's Xbox also appears to be exploring this model, but in a completely different direction—rather than raising prices, it is using personalized offers to attract users back to Game Pass subscriptions.
Recently, Reddit user synthlov3r posted in the r/XboxGamePass community, revealing that they received a customized subscription offer for Xbox Game Pass. Based in the US, the user had used Game Pass intermittently over the past two years. After canceling their subscription for nearly a month and hesitating whether to resubscribe, they encountered a special offer upon visiting the Game Pass page: just $16.09 per month for the first year, reverting to the standard price of $22.99 per month after 12 months.
In the comments section below the post, multiple users reported receiving similar differentiated offers, with monthly fees ranging from $18 to $20, confirming that Xbox is trialing dynamic pricing for specific user groups.
It should be noted that this is not a permanent adjustment to the subscription price; the discount applies only to the first 12 months, after which standard pricing resumes. During this period, users can enjoy all the benefits of Game Pass Ultimate, including: access to over 500 PC and console games, day-one releases, Fortnite Crew, EA Play and Ubisoft+ Classics, 15 hours of cloud gaming per month, in-game perks, and online multiplayer services.
Currently, Xbox has not officially commented on its dynamic pricing strategy, and whether this model will be rolled out to more users remains to be seen. However, it is clear that amid increasingly fierce competition in the subscription market, Xbox is attempting to reach potential subscribers more precisely through flexible pricing tactics.
