Steam's Delayed Adult Content Review Forces Postponement of 'Future? No Thanks!'

"Future? No Thanks!" failed to launch on its originally scheduled date of July 22. Developer Molleindustria stated that Steam spent several weeks assessing the scope of nudity in the game and continues to label it as Adults Only, hindering its release.

Producer Paolo Pedercini stated that the game contains brief nudity and adult content but does not directly depict sexual intercourse. He believes the title should fall under ESRB 17+ or PEGI 16+ ratings, rather than being classified as an adult game primarily intended for sexual arousal. If Steam maintains its current labeling, the game's store page visibility and purchase availability will be restricted, making it unsellable in Germany and China.

Pedercini is considering adjusting the game to bypass these restrictions, but Steam has not clearly specified what needs to be changed. The platform previously hinted that some achievement names might be inappropriate; he asked if changing "Have Sex One Last Time" to "Seek Romance One Last Time" would help, but received no reply. He described the entire review process as slow and ambiguous, causing a standstill in six years of development and established release plans.

Meredith Gran, developer of "Perfect Tides: Station to Station," also experienced stricter scrutiny. She noted in her adult content description that the game contains non-explicit depictions of sexual activity and textual narratives, verbal abuse, and recreational drug use. Steam subsequently requested a build that concentrated the relevant content, and it took the platform another two weeks after receiving it to provide a result.

The sequel was eventually approved for listing and released on schedule. Gran stated that when she launched the original "Perfect Tides" four years ago, the review was completed smoothly in about a week; this time, however, she was left in the dark during the wait, unsure of what the reviewers were considering or whether her work would be approved for sale.

The unreleased horror Roguelite game "Five Hundred Knives Between Fingers Game" also faced restrictions when creating its Steam store page. Developer Heather Flowers initially submitted a promotional image featuring severed fingers with red bloodstains, which was rejected by the platform. She later replaced it with an image showing intact palms, knives placed between the fingers, and pink blood. She also prepared a bloodless version of the demo to facilitate content creators uploading gameplay footage.

Developers reported that after submitting their works and content descriptions, subsequent reviews were mostly conducted behind closed doors, with platforms potentially requesting builds or instructions to help locate relevant content. Previously, "The Horse" was also removed from Steam and other stores due to sexual content. Valve did not respond regarding this content review process.
