Spike Chunsoft and developer Gemdrops have announced that Danganronpa 2x2 will be officially released on January 14, 2027. The game will launch on PS5, Xbox Series, Switch 2, Switch, and PC, with the PC version available on Steam and the Epic Games Store.
Based on the setting and characters of Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, this title adds an entirely new storyline. An unexpected incident changes the course of events, leading to different victims, culprits, and methods of murder. Officials state that the scale of the new story is comparable to the original.
The story takes place on Jabberwock Island, a former tourist destination. Students from Hope's Peak Academy arrive on the island for a school trip, but Monokuma reappears and forces them into a deadly killing game. Players must investigate cases and mysteries on the island to find a way to escape.
The gameplay progresses chapter by chapter, with each chapter divided into three main parts: Daily Life, Investigation, and Class Trial. During Daily Life, players can explore the island and interact with other students; after a case occurs, they must examine crime scenes, question relevant individuals, and collect evidence.
During Class Trials, evidence gathered during investigations becomes "Truth Bullets." Players must identify contradictions in testimonies during fast-paced debates to gradually pinpoint the culprit. The trial segments feature full voice acting.
In addition to the new story, this title fully includes the original scenario of Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, with updated visuals and presentation for modern platforms, along with quality-of-life improvements. A new introductory trailer and a batch of screenshots have been officially released.
