If you miss the Japanese suspense adventure games that kept you up all night, enjoy urban legends, mystery推理, and story-driven adventures, or simply appreciate the emotional bonds between girls, then this new indie title, "MONOPHOBIA," might pique your interest.
"MONOPHOBIA" is a 2.5D urban legend suspense adventure game. Players need to collect clues, organize information, and gradually uncover the truth hidden behind the rumors in streets filled with an atmosphere of urban legends.
A Girl Without a Past, and a Girl with Psychic Abilities
The story of "MONOPHOBIA" revolves around two girls with special backgrounds.
Kirihara Konoka, a mysterious and silent girl.
And Nakano Shiho, a gyaru classmate with a psychic constitution who always wears a cheerful smile.
Due to a series of strange incidents, the two gradually become partners, jointly investigating the various anomalies hidden in the corners of the city.
Disappearances, rumors, urban legends, and entities that defy conventional explanation.
As the investigation deepens, the two will not only get closer to the truth of the events but also gradually touch upon the secrets hidden deep within each other's hearts.
For "MONOPHOBIA," supernatural phenomena are merely the beginning of the story.
The trust, bonds, and emotional changes gradually established between the girls are also important themes throughout the journey.
A 2.5D Urban Legend Mystery Blending Retro and Modern Styles
Visual presentation is undoubtedly one of the most impressive aspects of "MONOPHOBIA."
The game adopts a retro style reminiscent of the fifth-generation console era, constructing a nostalgic world with low-polygon characters and pixelated scenes. Combined with modern lighting techniques and environmental storytelling, the city feels both怀旧 and imbued with an indescribable sense of unease.
Players will explore in a side-scrolling 2.5D space.
By investigating scenes, collecting information, and interacting with characters, players record scattered clues in a log system and use logical reasoning to connect them, gradually revealing the truth hidden behind the urban legends.
When familiar streets begin to feelUnfamiliar, and the strange occurrences from rumors truly appear before your eyes, "MONOPHOBIA" attempts to create that subtle fear existing between reality and unreality.
Popular Writer and Illustrator Join the Creative Team
In addition to its unique urban legend theme, the creative team behind "MONOPHOBIA" is also worth noting.
The script for this title involves light novel author Mikami Teren. In addition to writing novels, he is also one of the main scenario writers for "Link! Like! Love Live!", specializing in depicting delicate and tense emotional relationships between characters.
The character design and key visual art are handled by illustrator Wata. Known for designing characters for popular VTubers such as Hyakumantenbara Salome, their distinctive and recognizable art style leaves a strong impression.
Beyond urban legends and suspenseful investigations, "MONOPHOBIA" also seems to aim at telling a story about growth and choices.
The development team, Dendrobium, stated that this is their first independently developed title, and the core theme of the entire story stems from a simple question:
"The more people strive for what they desire, the easier it is for them to lose sight of what they truly want."
This theme is also woven through the game's main characters.
While investigating the series of strange incidents, the two girls must not only uncover the truth behind the urban legends but also constantly confront their own confusion, hesitation, and choices.
For the development team, "MONOPHOBIA" aims to present not just the moment when the mystery is finally solved, but also the growth and turmoil experienced by the characters in their search for answers.
