According to Circana's "Future of Video Game Consumer Insights" report, rising costs are becoming a more significant reason for US consumers to cancel game subscription services. Among those who canceled the base tier of Xbox Game Pass, PlayStation Plus Essential, or Nintendo Switch Online, over 40% cited cost as the primary reason, an increase from the first quarter.
Matt Piscatella from Circana shared these findings, pointing out that the proportion of cancellations due to cost is becoming increasingly prominent among these three types of subscription services.
Piscatella also clarified that this data does not mean that over 40% of subscribers have canceled their memberships. "I estimate some people in the comments will misinterpret this as 41% of subscribers having canceled. Of course, that is not what the data means," he stated.
This survey comes as game subscription services have become an increasingly important part of console ecosystems. PlayStation Plus, Xbox Game Pass, and Nintendo Switch Online all require regular payments and offer various membership benefits, such as online services and game libraries.
PlayStation Plus is divided into three tiers: Essential, Extra, and Premium. Depending on the subscription level, they offer online multiplayer, monthly free games, and access to a more extensive game library, respectively.
Xbox Game Pass covers Xbox consoles, PC, and cloud gaming platforms, with higher-tier subscriptions offering access to Microsoft's first-party new releases and other games. Nintendo Switch Online focuses on online multiplayer, cloud saves, and access to a library of classic Nintendo games, with additional content available through the Expansion Pack.
Circana's survey results specifically target cancellations of the base tiers of PlayStation Plus, Xbox Game Pass, and Nintendo Switch Online. The data shows that the influence of cost factors is growing among users who choose to terminate these subscriptions.
The survey did not calculate the overall cancellation rate for each service. The figure of over 40% refers to the proportion of users who canceled these services and listed cost as one of the main reasons for their cancellation.
