Recently, at the opening ceremony of BlizzCon 2026, Blizzard officially announced their new open-world shooter, "StarCraft," releasing the first CG trailer. The game is scheduled for release in 2030 and is currently in early development.

The CG trailer showcases the journey of Terran Dominion Marines from enlistment training and donning power armor to engaging in large-scale ground combat against the Zerg, with snippets of Mengsk's speech also appearing. The story is set more than seventy years after "StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void," focusing on the brutal war between Terran Dominion soldiers and the Zerg. Only a CG cinematic was released this time, with no actual gameplay footage shown. Platforms, multiplayer modes, weapon systems, and map scales have not yet been announced.
The developers explained the design philosophy behind this title. In past RTS games, players acted as commanders looking down on the battlefield and directing units; in this game, the perspective is lowered, with players themselves becoming one of the Marines on the battlefield, personally stepping into theWarFire of the Koprulu Sector, focusing on a survival experience where "every step is hard-won."
This marks Blizzard's third attempt to transform the StarCraft IP into a shooter: "StarCraft: Ghost" was a console tactical action game announced in 2002, which was officially cancelled in 2006 after multiple delays. The codenamed "Ares" project was a Battlefield-style multiplayer shooter that was cancelled in 2019, with resources redirected to the development of "Diablo IV" and "Overwatch 2".
PCGamer pointed out that, given the precedent of two previous project cancellations, many veteran RTS players have mixed feelings: they are eager for new content from the IP but worried that the new title might once again encounter development crises. Meanwhile, the significant shift in genre has also raised concerns among traditional RTS fans. Blizzard stated that gameplay demonstrations will be gradually released over the next few years, and all current settings are subject to change.
