Blizzard dropped a surprise announcement this morning, revealing that a new hero will be added to its MOBA game, Heroes of the Storm. Despite the game being effectively shelved for four years (or even eight, depending on how you count), the new hero is Xal'atath.
Xal'atath comes from World of Warcraft and is the central antagonist of the current storyline. Although she has an elven appearance, she is actually a "Herald of the Void," currently plotting to devour the world-soul of a planet. Just standard villain stuff!
This is huge news for Heroes of the Storm players. The game essentially entered maintenance mode back in 2022: while servers remained operational, there were no major content updates, only occasional balance patches and bug fixes. Although rumors circulated before this year's BlizzCon, players didn't expect Heroes of the Storm to receive any major updates until recently.
Blizzard didn't make many grand promises. Blizzard President Johanna Faries thanked players on stage for their support of the game and hinted that another new hero might be released soon.
Xal'atath will land on the Public Test Realm on Monday, with a planned official release on September 28.
