On the opening night of BlizzCon 2026, a major announcement arrived as expected. Johanna Ferris, President of Blizzard Entertainment, took the stage to announce that an animated Diablo series is currently in development at Netflix.
Ferris stated, "We have always been dedicated to finding top-tier creative partners to expand the stories of our IPs. Currently, we have many exciting projects in development across our major core universes, and today we are thrilled to unveil one of these special initiatives."
"We are thrilled to announce that we are collaborating with Netflix to create a new Diablo animated series. As a long-time Diablo player myself, I deeply love the dark atmosphere of the Sanctuary world and am very much looking forward to seeing this project come to fruition."
That covers all the information currently available. The official release date has not been announced, nor has it been revealed which animation studio is producing this Netflix Diablo series. However, it is worth noting that this is not the first time rumors of a collaboration between Xbox and Netflix have surfaced.
About a month after Asha Sharma took over as the new head of Xbox, reports emerged that Netflix Co-CEO Greg Peters had expressed his support for her. It is said that Sharma and Peters "exchanged ideas" on potential collaborations, including bundling Netflix with Xbox Game Pass into a unified subscription service.
Also in July 2026, Sharma proposed a strategic plan to strengthen Xbox's cross-media presence, covering "film, television, consumer merchandise, brand sponsorships, live experiences, and establishing new partnerships globally, including in the Chinese market." This direction was undoubtedly inspired by the huge success of Amazon's Fallout series.
It is clear that the Netflix Diablo animated series is another step in Xbox's expansion into the cross-media landscape. Moreover, given the discussions between Sharma and the Netflix Co-CEO, among the other "exciting developments" mentioned by Ferris in the announcement, there may well be another Netflix collaboration project soon to be revealed.
