This week, the Roblox Developers Conference is taking place. This massive user-generated content platform announced several initiatives aimed at reaching more players with its games and significantly boosting user engagement and business growth. However, last night, during the keynote speech by co-founder and CEO David Baszucki, attention briefly shifted to a Roblox video blogger named Emathiio—who rushed onto the stage to make a statement about child safety issues.
A video shared by Roblox user BearPuppyRBX on X shows the CEO walking onto the stage amid lights and applause. Shortly after, Emathiio appeared behind him, running and shouting, "We deserve better treatment." He was quickly tackled and subdued by a person疑似 security personnel and two stage staff members.
Baszucki tried to remain calm and defused the sudden situation with a joke. "Thank you all for being here," he said. "As you just saw, everyone gets a bit excited whenever RDC is held."
Afterward, Emathiio released a YouTube video explaining his actions. He stated that he wanted to speak out for all children affected by the platform, who lack the opportunity to voice their concerns on stages at events like RDC. "Everyone says they don't want AI, everyone says they don't want faces distorted beyond recognition, and everyone hopes for improved child safety measures. No one wants the platform to solely cater to investors. But for every year progress is delayed, more children are genuinely impacted."
In the latter part of the video, he responded to critics: "You can say I'm just seeking attention if you want; I really don't care. I don't expect everyone to agree with or support my actions. I didn't intend to ruin RDC or spoil anyone's fun. I just wanted to loudly voice what everyone has been holding back for years."
Although Emathiio did not specify which aspect of Roblox's child safety measures he was protesting, the company is currently under investigation by the U.S. Senate regarding the level of protection provided to minors on the platform and whether effective measures are in place to prevent individuals from using Roblox to groom or exploit children. The company has introduced stricter parental control features and age-verification mechanisms to address these concerns. Nevertheless, lawsuits from some parents and multiple states keep child safety issues in the public eye.
Roblox's series of missteps in interviews further fueled the controversy. In 2025, during an interview on The New York Times' "Hard Fork" podcast, Baszucki appeared dismissive of criticisms regarding child safety and even seriously considered introducing gambling mechanisms into Roblox, calling the idea "brilliant." Earlier this year, Dr. Elizabeth Milovidov, Roblox's child safety advisor, seemed to emphasize in an interview with Vulture that parents need to take more responsibility to prevent their children from encountering bad actors on Roblox.
Additionally, there is an ongoing wrongful death lawsuit involving the subsequent suicide of a 13-year-old platform user. Roblox has requested that the case be moved to arbitration rather than undergoing a full trial, citing that "the user created a Roblox account, accepted updates to the Roblox Terms of Service six times, used and redeemed Roblox gift cards twice, and purchased virtual currency within the platform nineteen times."
Children deserve better treatment—this statement itself is uncontroversial. In my view, it should also be uncontroversial that even if children agreed to Roblox's Terms of Service, which currently stipulate otherwise, they have the right to a full trial. This right should not be stripped away, even after death.
