Recently, former Valve senior developer Chet Faliszek stated that GTA Online, which has been operating for over a decade and continues to generate billions in revenue, has extremely strong user retention. It will be very challenging for Rockstar to migrate a large number of veteran players to GTA 6 Online.
Few games manage to maintain an operational cycle lasting over a decade, yet GTA Online has continued to receive updates and support for more than ten years.
With still some time before the new title's release, GTA 6 Online already harbors hidden risks, rooted in the fact that GTA 5 Online remains incredibly popular. Faliszek believes it will be difficult for GTA 6 Online to draw players away from the existing GTA Online ecosystem.
The developer noted that some publishers in the past chose to simply shut down older games to force players onto new titles, but this approach has not been very successful. He also raised a question: What can GTA 6 Online offer that GTA 5 Online does not, to incentivize players to make the switch? "It's really difficult to get players to leave an old game. What exactly can GTA 6 bring to the table that GTA 5 already has?"
GTA Online continues to generate billions of dollars in revenue annually, and Rockstar likely has even higher ambitions for the online mode of its successor, GTA 6. However, in pushing for this migration, the studio risks alienating a segment of its veteran player base.
Even if GTA 6 Online is likely to remain hugely popular at launch, Chet's questions are worth pondering. Millions of players have invested vast amounts of time into GTA Online, and it remains to be seen how Rockstar will convince these players to abandon their years of accumulated progress.
