Sony Interactive Entertainment released the PS5 action-adventure game Marvel's Wolverine on September 15. The game centers its combat around continuous aggression, allowing players to trigger their healing factor and revive on the spot when health reaches zero, provided they have built up two layers of rage.
Developed jointly by Insomniac Games, the studio behind the Marvel's Spider-Man series, and Marvel Games, the title features Wolverine fighting up close with his adamantium claws. The overall action style emphasizes direct and intense melee confrontations.
The story focuses on Logan, who has lost his memories and once fell into a feral state, recounting the dark past of his time with X-Force and his attempt to build a new world for mutants. A rage meter is located in the upper left corner of the combat UI; attacking enemies builds rage, and once two bars are stored, the healing factor activates when health is depleted.
The game is rated CERO Z in Japan, restricted to players aged 18 and older. The Japanese version retains depictions of dismemberment, blood splatter, and limb destruction caused by explosions, while also offering an option to disable these visuals. Game*Spark praised the continuous aggression combat design in its review but considered the overall scale of the title small, giving it a score of 7.
As of September 15, Marvel's Wolverine holds a Metacritic media average score of 77 based on 117 reviews. Its violent presentation and action system have received some praise, while other critiques note limited freedom and a tendency for the gameplay to become monotonous.
Marvel's Wolverine is now available on PS5, with the Standard Edition priced at 8,980 yen and the Digital Deluxe Edition at 9,980 yen. On launch day, the official Japanese voice cast was also announced.
