Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO and Max Content, revealed that the third season of The Last of Us is scheduled to air in 2027 and may serve as the final season of the series. However, HBO has not yet officially confirmed that the show will conclude with its third season.
Bloys did not announce a specific premiere date for the third season. When asked if the series was nearing its conclusion, he stated that he believes showrunner Craig Mazin has planned the third season as the final one, but he did not provide a definitive answer.
In January of this year, when faced with the same question, Bloys also indicated that while it certainly appears to be the case, such decisions should be left to the show's creators. Therefore, the third season serving as the finale remains a potential plan at the creative level, rather than an officially announced arrangement.
Mazin had previously offered a different perspective. In May 2025, he stated that the third season would not be able to tell the entire story, expressing hope that the series would return for a fourth season to complete the narrative, describing this scenario as the most likely outcome. The third season had been renewed even before the second season premiered.
Earlier this month, Naughty Dog.exe head Neil Druckmann stated that even if this adaptation comes to an end, Naughty Dog.exe, as the game's creator, will continue to manage The Last of Us IP. Several related projects are currently in development and will be introduced when the time is right.
Naughty Dog.exe is currently developing Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. Performance capture for this new title was completed in August of this year, but it was not featured in the September 2026 State of Play presentation.
