No Need to Rely Solely on Brute Force: Wo Long 2 Allows You to Plant Flags to Weaken Enemy Morale

"Wo Long 2: Phoenix Fire Across the Sky" was available for hands-on play at Tokyo Game Show 2026. The showcased version included part of the Changban battlefield, with new Phoenix Techniques, aerial deflections, and open-area exploration adding more variety to combat and level progression in the sequel.

Developed by Team NINJA, this title is the sequel to the Three Kingdoms-themed dark fantasy action RPG "Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty." The demo was held at the Koei Tecmo booth in the Makuhari Messe exhibition hall, continuing the core combat mechanic of deflecting enemy attacks with "Deflect" and immediately counterattacking, while making the transition between attacks and deflections smoother.

The new "Phoenix Technique" system leverages the power of the phoenix to enhance actions such as dashing, defending, jumping, light-foot movement, and deflecting. Among these, the Phoenix Jump lets players dodge at precise moments during enemy attacks and reposition behind opponents. This creates new offensive opportunities against shield-bearing enemies that are difficult to break through from the front.

Aerial combat has also been expanded. Players can not only perform aerial attacks but also use certain Martial Arts and Divine Beasts mid-air; even while jumping, they can intercept enemy assaults with aerial deflections. This allows ground combos to extend into the air and quickly transition back to offense via deflection.

Controls in the demo start with the R1 button, branching into various actions depending on the input. Although there are more moves available, accessing each ability is straightforward, allowing players to get accustomed to them after a short trial. Successfully executing a Deflect or Phoenix Technique naturally flows into the next attack sequence.

In terms of levels, the sequel transforms Three Kingdoms battlefields such as the Battle of Changban and the Battle of Red Cliffs into expansive open areas. Players can either challenge powerful enemies directly or explore the map and raise their own banners to lower enemy morale and improve combat conditions. The TGS demo offered access to part of the Changban region, where players could alter local battle dynamics through exploration and capturing strongholds.

The progression system also allows flexibility when switching weapons. While different growth attributes pair better with certain weapon types, attributes can be adjusted relatively freely, enabling players to shift their build focus when changing weapons rather than being locked into a single one long-term.

The demo culminates in a boss fight against Cao Ren, who was reportedly strengthened specifically for the event. "Wo Long 2: Phoenix Fire Across the Sky" is scheduled to launch on March 4, 2027, for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, and Steam; the α Experience Build, featuring early content from the Battle of Changban, will be available until September 30.
