Sony recently announced a patent for a hardware self-repair system, planning to use large language models to generate custom firmware code for devices like the PlayStation, automatically diagnosing and resolving software issues. This approach aims to reduce repairs, customer service handling, and manual troubleshooting steps, but the publication of a patent does not mean the feature is already in use.
According to the patent description, AI servers monitor issues occurring on client devices and analyze data uploaded from them. If the system determines that corrective action is needed, it can generate diagnostic plans and repair code tailored to the specific fault, then automatically push the custom firmware update to the corresponding device.
If the system deems immediate repair unnecessary, the relevant data will be recorded and submitted for manual review. Sony hopes to resolve various software issues remotely through this method, sparing players from visiting repair centers due to software glitches, while also reducing warranty returns and customer support costs. The scope of this system is not limited to PlayStation consoles but can also cover other hardware under the Sony brand.
This solution also carries significant risks. Code dynamically generated by large language models cannot be guaranteed to be entirely free of defects; if erroneous code enters a firmware update, it could prevent devices from booting properly. Since code generation and distribution are centralized on cloud servers, these servers themselves could become targets for attacks.
If the central server were compromised, malicious code could be distributed to a large number of Sony devices, including PlayStation consoles, via the update mechanism. Therefore, for this solution to be practically implemented, strict code review, distribution verification, and security protection mechanisms are required. Sony has currently only disclosed the technical path envisioned in the patent, and it remains uncertain whether it will be used in actual products.
