LG Display has begun mass production of a 24.5-inch 720Hz OLED panel, primarily aimed at high-level esports competitions. ASUS is the first to incorporate it into the ROG Swift OLED PG259QWS Ace monitor, with other monitor brands expected to follow suit.
This panel features a resolution of 1920×1080 and achieves a stable 720Hz refresh rate through LG's proprietary algorithms. LG Display states that this is the highest refresh rate gaming OLED panel currently on the market, with a response time of 0.02 milliseconds, which is among the lowest in the industry.
However, 720Hz is not the highest refresh rate available for monitor panels, as non-OLED IPS panels with refresh rates reaching 1000Hz are already on the market. Compared to high refresh rate products like 480Hz, average players may not easily perceive the difference offered by 720Hz.
To fully leverage the performance of this panel, games and graphics cards need to output 720 frames per second. Compared to the latest AAA titles with ray tracing enabled, less demanding esports games are more likely to reach this frame rate, which is why LG Display has positioned the product in the highly competitive esports sector.
The ROG Swift OLED PG259QWS Ace, the first monitor to feature this panel, has been selected as the official esports display for the upcoming PGL Singapore Major Counter-Strike 2 tournament later this year, highlighting the primary use case targeted by the 720Hz panel.
The ASUS ROG Swift OLED PG259QWS Ace is scheduled to launch in the US later this year with a price tag of $1,099. For a 24.5-inch monitor, this pricing clearly targets the professional esports market where high refresh rates are in demand.
