Bungie has confirmed it will continue to develop the Destiny franchise and plans to restore some previously vaulted content in Destiny 2. However, a third mainline entry, Destiny 3, has not yet been confirmed.
Earlier this year, Bungie released the final major content update for Destiny 2, leading many to believe that not only was the studio's long-term support for the game coming to an end, but that the entire franchise might be reaching its conclusion. Subsequent reports also suggested that Sony had previously declined to greenlight Destiny 3.
In their latest joint statement, Bungie head Poria Torkan and Product Lead Josh Deane described Destiny as the foundation of Bungie's future. The studio still has more stories to tell and new worlds to build, but the team needs sufficient time to properly advance the franchise.
Both executives explicitly stated that Bungie's work on Destiny is not over. This stance leaves room for future content and potential sequels, but the statement did not confirm that Destiny 3 has been approved or entered development.
With no clear news on a new title, Bungie will continue supporting Destiny 2. Rather than focusing entirely on brand-new original content, the studio is currently preparing to bring back previously vaulted campaigns, raids, and locations, thereby expanding the range of currently available experiences.
Aside from Destiny 2 and Marathon, Bungie has yet to announce specific plans for its next major project. Details regarding the restoration of vaulted Destiny 2 content, release schedules, and the next phase of the Destiny series have also not been made public.
