Kit Harington recently spoke again about the shelved Game of Thrones Jon Snow sequel. He indicated that the project could still find a viable direction in the future, and that he is now more willing to revisit the character of Jon Snow and his world.
The finale of Game of Thrones sparked significant controversy, but the franchise did not stop there. This year, the new spin-off A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms received Emmy nominations, and House of the Dragon Season 3 garnered higher popularity and attention than Season 2. HBO currently has several Game of Thrones-related projects in development.
In a retrospective on the "Happy Sad Confused" podcast hosted by Josh Horowitz, Harrington recalled that the Jon Snow sequel had been in development since the early 2020s, lasting about two years. The series was originally intended to follow up on the show's finale, continuing Jon Snow's story after he left Westeros and headed north of the Wall.
Harrington stated that he was initially willing to participate in the development because he believed the story had potential. However, he reached a consensus with HBO and George R.R. Martin from the start: if the right direction couldn't be found, they shouldn't force it. After a period of brainstorming, Harrington felt it wasn't the right time and proactively suggested halting the project.
After Game of Thrones ended, Harrington publicly discussed the anxiety and alcoholism issues brought on by sudden fame, as well as the impact of the series' finale and the intense public reaction. Since then, he has focused more on family life and appeared in other projects, including portraying Dane Whitman in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Over time, Harrington's attitude toward returning has changed. He stated that after completing other work, he now feels more comfortable with Jon Snow, the story's world, and their place in his life. However, the Jon Snow sequel has not yet resumed development, and his comments merely leave the possibility open for the future.
