Infinity Ward has confirmed that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will refocus on ordinary soldiers, shaping its campaign and multiplayer around ground warfare reminiscent of real-world news. This title is the seventh entry in the "Modern Warfare" series and the latest installment since the franchise's 2019 reboot.
Multiplayer Technical Designer Jack Hoppus stated that the team aims to continue the gritty, realistic style, ensuring that while the story isn't identical to reality, it feels like events that could occur in the real world. Returning to traditional modern warfare and ground combat is the core principle unifying the project's visual style and tone.
Recent "Modern Warfare" titles have largely centered on highly trained special forces operating behind the scenes to neutralize relatively isolated threats. This installment returns to the perspective of regular soldiers, with the campaign trailer showcasing North Korea's invasion of the Korean Peninsula and large-scale military engagements, where a group of hastily assembled troops must navigate through the conflict.
To match this tone, Infinity Ward is crafting a movement system that balances realism with fluidity. Firearms need to feel powerful and substantial without making controls cumbersome. When characters approach walls, they raise their muzzles and tuck weapons close to their chests; upon entering doorways, guns shift orientation along with the arms.
Multiplayer gameplay will cater to both fast-paced aggression and tactical playstyles. Players can still slide-cancel to quickly close in on opponents, or carefully choose engagement timings, check corners, and hold positions. The development team hopes that players with strong mechanical skills and those adept at reading the battlefield can both win engagements. Hoppus specifically highlighted that the marksman rifles in this title offer an outstanding feel.
Improvements in this title also stem from the team's review of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, with movement performance being a key focus. Infinity Ward will also streamline the complex structure of weapon platforms and the Gunsmith system, allowing different firearms to share attachments more effectively. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is scheduled for release on October 22.
