Sony has announced that it will stop using optical drives by 2028, a move that has sparked widespread controversy. Although it ultimately had no real impact, the recent controversial actions by PlayStation have led toconcerns about the next-generation console, the PS6, are rampant on social mediamany even threatening to boycott the PS6. However, at the same time, Xbox seems to be taking a different path.
Recent news suggests that Microsoft did not directly cancel the optical drive and notify users, but instead asked Xbox users whether they wanted to keep the optical drive in the next-generation Helix console. This seems like a very wise move, proving that Xbox is at least listening to its users.
Xbox sent a survey to users, asking whether they would like to see related features in future products. One question was whether the next-generation Xbox should allow users to install games from physical discs.
We now know that although the proportion of physical media is declining, millions still support it. If survey results reflect this, then the Xbox Helix is likely to include an optical drive.
Previously, Xbox CEO Satya Nadella also stated that they hope to provide users with more choices, hinting that Xbox will continue to adopt the disc-based model. If this is indeed the case, and Xbox continues to maintain its lineup of exclusive games, many players may choose the Helix over the PS6.
