Casting news has emerged for the DC animated film #Funtime, with actors reportedly confirmed for two generations of Robins, Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, and Chris Pine receiving an offer to voice Batman. However, James Gunn has not officially announced the cast, so this information remains rumor.
Insider Jeff Snyder claims that Mason Thames will play Dick Grayson, Logan Kim will play Jason Todd, and Marsai Martin will play Barbara Gordon. Chris Pine has reportedly received an offer to voice Batman, but it has not been confirmed whether he has accepted.
The casting of #Funtime will not determine the future Batman for the DC Universe. Gunn previously stated that the film is not part of the DC Universe, but rather an "Elseworlds" project similar to Matt Reeves' The Batman series.
If Chris Pine accepts the offer, he is expected to only voice Batman in #Funtime. The DC Universe plans to introduce its own Batman through the live-action film The Brave and the Bold, with the role to be cast separately. Pine previously played Steve Trevor in the DC Extended Universe's Wonder Woman films.
Meanwhile, Matt Reeves' The Batman 2 is scheduled for release next year. Gunn still plans to bring the DC Universe version of Batman to the big screen afterward, but related projects must wait until Reeves completes his Elseworlds Batman series.
Mason Thames starred in The Black Phone and its sequel, and played Hiccup in the live-action How to Train Your Dragon. Logan Kim portrayed Podcast in Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, and also played Hershel in The Walking Dead: Dead City.
Marsai Martin began acting as a child star, playing Diane Johnson in the TV series Black-ish. The current rumors do not provide further details on Barbara Gordon's specific role in #Funtime.
#Funtime will adopt a hybrid animation style, with Swaybox Studios combining CG animation, stop-motion puppets, and live-action performances. The film is directed by Arthur Mintz, with the screenplay written by Matthew Aldrich, screenwriter of Coco.
In the story, Dick Grayson and Jason Todd are childhood friends who take different paths as they grow up: Dick becomes Batman's protégé, while Jason joins the Joker's gang. #Funtime is currently scheduled for theatrical release on June 30, 2028.
