Diablo 5 Removes Traditional Towns, Players Will Use a Traveling Convoy as a Safe Haven

Diablo 5 will remove the series' traditional safe towns, replacing them with a traveling caravan as the player's base of operations. Diablo makes his return in the new installment; Sanctuary has suffered under long-term devastation, and players can no longer visit towns to find merchants or other helpful NPCs.

The new game takes place several generations after Diablo 4. The previous protagonist defeated Lilith and Mephisto, ushering in a "Golden Age," but Diablo later conquered Westmarch, killing the heroes who stood in his way. By the time the new protagonist appears, he has ruled Sanctuary for many years. Diablo 4's "Lord of Hatred" update and other content also allowed Blizzard to better understand player preferences, which informed the changes planned for the new title.

During a demonstration at BlizzCon 2026, developers referred to the new protagonist as the "Heir of Westmarch" and stated that the game world's environment would change with each login. The traveling caravan will serve as a mobile safe zone, with its location potentially shifting as the story progresses. This has led players to speculate that procedural generation may not only apply to dungeons but also affect the overworld.

There will be no merchants available for trading during exploration; quest-giving NPCs will be stationed at the caravan. Players need to prepare before setting out. Some human characters in the wild will become enemies, including a type called "Fear Commanders," which act as mini-bosses and corrupt their surrounding environment.

Rescuing characters may also be tied to the caravan's development. One speculation is that the game might feature areas similar to Strongholds in Diablo 4, where players rescue characters and bring them back to the caravan instead of turning cleared areas into safe towns. Under this theory, rescuing a blacksmith could unlock gear crafting, selling, and salvaging, while saving an alchemist might provide access to more potions.

Diablo 5 also plans to offer more starting classes than any previous entry in the series. Service NPCs such as merchants, blacksmiths, jewelers, and alchemists will be concentrated within the caravan, with player supplies and rest revolving around this hub.
