"World of Warcraft: Infinite" Beta Under Heavy Load, Blizzard Calls Players "Crazy"

"World of Warcraft: Infinite" began its closed Beta test on September 17. Access was primarily granted to players who pre-ordered the Deluxe Bundle and Collector's Edition, rather than being open to everyone. However, a massive influx of players at launch immediately overwhelmed the test server environment. Many eligible players encountered extremely long login queues and frequent disconnections. Those who managed to get into the game experienced severe lag when looting items and turning in quests, recreating the iconic server queue scenes from the early days of World of Warcraft's launch.

Josh Greenfield, Senior Game Designer for the World of Warcraft Classic team, said he was so excited he couldn't sleep. He stated that this Beta generated the most insane data he has seen in his 17 years at Blizzard and nearly eight years working on Classic development, believing that the team had indeed created something very special.

Senior Game Producer Tom Ellis later provided a technical explanation, stating that the Beta PTR test environment did not use the live server hardware cluster and was configured with only a single regional server instance. Previous WoW Beta tests did not experience such high traffic, as the infrastructure was not designed to handle concurrency on this scale. The team urgently scaled up server capacity after the launch, gradually improving login issues and in-game lag.

Even though there was a pre-purchase threshold for test access, player enthusiasm far exceeded the development team's expectations. Developers described it as "masses of players frantically banging on the test server doors." Community forums and social media platforms were flooded with posts from players complaining about queue times and disconnections, or sharing their experiences after finally getting in. Many players joked that the game's title, "Infinite," now perfectly corresponds to the endless queue times.

This Beta test will continue until October 21, after which all character data will be wiped. The official game version will launch on November 4. It is positioned as a Classic Plus version based on the level 60 Vanilla era, adding new quests, dungeons, and game mechanics on top of the original world view, encouraging players to stay and play in the early world of Azeroth for an extended period.
