According to recent reports, following the massive success of Zack Cregg's Resident Evil film, Konami is considering a reboot of the Silent Hill film series. According to DreadCentral, Konami is evaluating potential Hollywood partners with plans to thoroughly revamp this classic horror franchise and launch a new storyline. It is reported that Konami executives are "green with envy" over Capcom's cinematic success with Resident Evil and hope to replicate that same glory using their own iconic IP.
In recent years, new entries in the Silent Hill series have been released, such as the well-received Silent Hill: Townfall, providing rich material for film adaptations. However, previous Silent Hill films performed poorly both at the box office and in terms of critical reception, often criticized for lacking engaging plots and high-quality horror effects. Fans complained that the movies failed to recreate the unsettling sense of fear found in the games. The most recent entry, Return to Silent Hill, directed by Christophe Gans, retold the story of Silent Hill 2 but received a poor response, described as "visually tacky."
On the other hand, Cregg's Resident Evil brought unexpected success to Capcom and Columbia Pictures, grossing over $100 million globally in its opening weekend and setting a new record for the series, with a Rotten Tomatoes score exceeding 90%. However, the development process was not smooth sailing; Cregg faced strong backlash from fans, who constantly complained about the casting, story direction, and lack of atmosphere prior to the release. But after the film's release, fan attitudes completely shifted, with many praising him for injecting new life into the series.
However, the praise may have come too late for Cregg. He previously stated that he was no longer involved in making films for the series, admitting he had "naively" thought fans would appreciate his interpretation. Although fans ultimately did enjoy it, the constant nitpicking left him thoroughly disheartened, and it remains unclear whether he will reconsider. For Konami, if they wish to increase their chances of success, choosing a horror director with an existing fan base would be a wise move, such as rising industry talents Curry Barker or Kane Parsons.
