Microsoft Is Ruining Xbox! Future Games May Interrupt Boss Fights with Ads

Microsoft is exploring an ad-supported method for accessing Xbox games. Its submitted patent envisions pausing the game at the system level to play ads, after which players can gain timed gameplay privileges ranging from 15 to 60 minutes.

The patent is titled "Context-Aware Management of Interactive Software Application Access." According to the patent document, the system would display "audio-visual promotional content" while the game is running and grant players a corresponding quota after playback ends, allowing temporary access to the game.

This approach essentially allows players to exchange watching ads for a period of gameplay time. Unlike the ads currently displayed on the XSX login screen, the ads described in the patent would directly interrupt the gameplay process, with the operating system responsible for pausing the game and managing access permissions.

In other words, if this technology is truly implemented in the future, players might find their screens suddenly paused during critical battles in a game, only able to continue their adventure after the ads finish playing.

The patent document specifies single-session access times ranging from 15 minutes to one hour, but there is no information yet indicating what ad frequency Microsoft might adopt, which games might be eligible, or whether this model will be launched as a new tier of Xbox Game Pass.

Microsoft recently limited Xbox Cloud Gaming usage within Game Pass Ultimate to 15 hours per month. If the ad-supported scheme is eventually implemented, it could become another way to provide timed game access, but the patent itself does not confirm that such a service is definitely launching.

Currently, this technology remains at the conceptual stage described in the patent. Microsoft has not confirmed whether it will be used on Xbox consoles or existing subscription services, nor has it announced any specific launch plans.
