The RPCS3 team announced that the PS3 version of Twisted Metal has reached 70 frames per second in the emulator for the first time. However, the game has not yet been added to RPCS3's "Playable" list. The team continues to work towards the goal of running the entire PS3 library by fixing bugs, improving performance, and resolving graphical issues.
Released in 2012, Twisted Metal originally targeted 720p resolution at 30 FPS. The game pushes the PlayStation 3's SPU co-processing units to their limits, making high-performance emulation in RPCS3 particularly challenging.
Achieving 70 FPS required enabling RPCS3's "Max Performance Tier." The test was conducted on Linux using a Ryzen 7 9800X3D processor, indicating that this frame rate relies on a powerful CPU and specific settings.
When a user asked about performance on a Ryzen 5 5600, 32GB of RAM, and an RX 5700 GPU, the RPCS3 team replied that frame rates would be "well below" 30 FPS. They explained that Twisted Metal is one of the most CPU-demanding games to emulate due to its heavy use of SPU units.
RPCS3's "Playable" status requires a game to be completable from start to finish with acceptable performance and without critical bugs that hinder progress. Twisted Metal does not yet meet this standard, and the team is still optimizing its performance and overall playability.
