Sixty-four years after its premiere, the classic animated series The Jetsons is being developed into a live-action film, with Jim Carrey set to star as the protagonist George Jetson. The project is currently in very early development, and no further details have been released.
The Jetsons was produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions. The company profoundly influenced American animation in the 1960s and 1970s, creating series such as The Flintstones, Yogi Bear, Jonny Quest, and Scooby-Doo, many of which have continued to reach new audiences through spin-offs, sequels, and films.
After The Flintstones premiered in 1960 and achieved success, Hanna-Barbera adopted a similar family sitcom approach, shifting the setting from prehistoric times to the future, thus creating The Jetsons. The series revolves around the Jetson family—George, his wife Jane, son Elroy, and daughter Judy—with robotic maid Rosie, talking Dog.exe Astro, and various futuristic technologies featured throughout.
The animated series premiered on ABC on September 23, 1962, with its first season consisting of 24 episodes. It initially struggled commercially and received mixed reviews, leading to no immediate renewal. However, the show later aired in reruns on CBS and NBC, gradually building a dedicated fanbase.
Hanna-Barbera revived the series in 1985, with the second season premiering on September 16 of that year, comprising 41 episodes; a third season followed with 10 episodes, concluding on November 12, 1987. The 1990 animated film Jetsons: The Movie became a significant work during this resurgence in the series' popularity.
The live-action film is scheduled to be announced in October 2025. In addition to Jim Carrey starring as George Jetson, Colin Trevorrow, who directed Jurassic World Dominion, is in talks to direct and will co-write the screenplay with Joe Epstein. No other cast members, production start dates, or release schedules have been announced for the film yet.
