Japan's PlayStation and PC Game Market Grows 13% as Capcom Tops Charts with Resident Evil: Requiem

Resident Evil Requiem became the main driver of growth in the Japanese PlayStation and PC game markets in the first half of 2026, helping Capcom top the publisher charts for both platforms in the region. According to Sensor Tower data, game sales in this market reached 21 million units during the same period, a 13% year-over-year increase.

Steam played a significant role in Resident Evil Requiem's performance. The game sold 2.6 million copies in its first month on the platform. Sensor Tower believes this launch performance further highlights Steam's role in helping Japanese premium AAA titles reach global players.

Player playtime also set a series record: Resident Evil Requiem averaged 25 hours of playtime on Steam.

The game's store page went live 264 days before launch, accumulating a large number of wishlists in the US, China, Europe, and Japan. Sensor Tower believes that opening the page early helped the game maintain attention prior to its release.

As of July, global sales of Resident Evil Requiem exceeded 8 million copies. Capcom's revenue growth in the first half of the year was also boosted by other titles, including the release of CogniSight and continued sales of Resident Evil 2 Remake and Resident Evil 4 Remake.
