Leaker KeplerL2 claims that the PS6 chip design is complete, with performance expected to be roughly double that of the PS5. Sony is also reportedly planning a handheld model. These reports have not been confirmed by Sony.
KeplerL2's mention of the chip being "taped out" means that the design and specifications are finalized and ready for manufacturing. At this pace, the PS6 could launch in November 2027, although there is no official release date yet.
In terms of performance, KeplerL2 cites 40 teraflops, which is lower than the 56 teraflops he attributes to the new Xbox. He also states that the PS6's ray tracing performance will be about 12 times that of the PS5 and will utilize the more efficient RDNA 5 architecture.
Floating-point performance alone does not determine gaming performance, as actual results are also influenced by hardware architecture and other factors. The report also speculates that the PS6 may use an upgraded version of the PSSR upscaling technology, though this has not been confirmed either.
As for the planned handheld model, it remains unclear what gaming experiences it will offer and how it will integrate with the console. Pricing is also undecided: the report estimates a bill of materials cost of around $960, speculating that Sony might price it at $900 if willing to absorb minor losses at launch. None of these prices are official information.
