Bungie Announces Marathon Update Roadmap, Adding Deathmatch Social Hub and More

Although Bungie admitted earlier this week that Marathon's player base fell short of expectations, the studio clearly stated that this 2026 title is far from finished. This sci-fi shooter will begin large-scale content updates later this year, with plans continuing into early 2027, including new Deathmatch modes, fresh areas, samurai-style new mechs, and much more.

On September 24, Bungie published a lengthy blog post titled "The Future of Marathon," detailing the update direction for this extraction shooter over the coming months. As previously teased by Bungie, the biggest news is that Marathon will no longer be limited to extraction shooter gameplay, offering richer gaming experiences and modes for all types of players.

Bungie stated in their blog: "Some players want a quick, casual match after work, others want to pull all-nighters with their teammates, and some want to test builds, compete head-to-head with other players, tackle high-difficulty content, or delve into the ruins of Tau Ceti IV following eerie clues. Marathon needs to meet all these demands."

In a video outlining the game's future direction, Kevin Yanes, Lead Design Director for Marathon, acknowledged the game's shortcomings: "We originally thought we could bring extraction gameplay to the mainstream audience, but ultimately failed to do so. What we made was a very traditional extraction shooter, no different from similar titles on the market." He also stated that Marathon's "loop of repeated failures" failed to attract enough players, so the team plans to add more diverse experiences to the game in the future.

Bungie described the "Nightfall" update as a smaller, more targeted content drop, followed by the first major step toward this grand vision—the "Symbiosis" update—launching in December.

In December, Bungie will add the first true permanent PvE mode to Marathon. The blog did not reveal further details about this previously teased mode, as related content is still in final polishing stages. Another new gameplay mode launching in December is an experimental Deathmatch mode. I am personally very excited to see Marathon incorporate more traditional competitive modes; the game's shooting mechanics are excellent, but the previous stealth-extraction gameplay often failed to fully showcase this core strength.

Bungie stated: "This gameplay style is more direct and less time-consuming, allowing players to hone their skills and engage in combat without risking failure in an entire match. We will continue to monitor player feedback on this experimental feature to guide the planning of Marathon's future competitive gameplay."

In December, Marathon will also introduce a new mech called "Bishop," which Bungie describes as a "high-performance mech warrior in Marathon." Bishop is a high-speed, high-damage assault mech whose core gameplay revolves around ambushing enemies and launching surprise attacks with "explosive melee damage."

A social space featuring a shooting range is also in development, expected to launch in December, allowing players to test weapons and mechs in a safe environment and interact with other players.

Bungie also promised that the newbie area "The Boundary" will undergo a major visual overhaul, with more ways to obtain high-end loot added to the map, along with the largest boss battle to date—fighting against a giant alien tick queen.

In addition to the 2026 update roadmap, Bungie also outlined some of the content and changes coming in the March 2027 update. Bungie stated that various aspects of Marathon, including its original extraction mode, will collectively form a "larger-scale evolution" for this shooter. While official details on the specific content of the March update were not provided, they teased parts of the early 2027 plan, including:

- Creating an "interconnected system" for PvE, PvP, and PvEvP modes to boost player retention, ensuring rewards are available regardless of preferred playstyle

- A brand-new tutorial process to lower the entry barrier for understanding Marathon

- Adjustments to the progression system and the "Cradle" mechanic

- More focused mission lines and new storylines

- New explorable areas

- Most anticipated: New alien hostile units

It is currently unclear what the specific settings for these alien units will be, but other parts of the blog mention that the "Pfhor," the iconic enemies of the Marathon series, are the soul of the franchise, and without them, it wouldn't be a Marathon game. I'd bet that Pfhor will definitely appear in 2027, although Bungie has hinted that they may have evolved compared to the versions players encountered in the Marathon trilogy from the 1990s.

This series of plans demonstrates Bungie's stance: Marathon is far from finished. Although the game did not become an instant hit as the team had hoped, the studio has not given up and has instead devised an ambitious update roadmap. However, following Sony's wave of layoffs, the team must advance these plans with fewer resources.
