Saw XI will be directed by Mike P. Nelson, with James Wan, director of the original film, returning as producer. The Saw franchise has already released ten films; although the core antagonist John Kramer, aka Jigsaw, died in the third installment, the series has continued through flashbacks, retcons, and the introduction of new apprentices.
The seventh installment was once billed as the final chapter, but more films followed. The previous entry, Saw X, is set between the first and second movies, depicting Jigsaw confronting his terminal cancer diagnosis, falling victim to a fraudulent treatment, and punishing those responsible. It was also the first film in the series to receive a "Fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The screenplay for Saw XI will be co-written by Greg McLean and Jeff Tokar. Adam Fogelson, head of New Line Cinema, stated that Nelson has his own unique vision for the film.
Nelson previously directed the 2021 reboot of Wrong Turn and the 2025 remake of Silent Night, Deadly Night. The latter introduced new story elements to the original slasher premise.
