Official concept art for the new Resident Evil film directed by Zach Cregg has been revealed, created by Dean Sherriff. In addition to the Resident Evil movie, Dean Sherriff has also contributed to works such as Fallout Season 2, Metropolis, *New Avengers, and Chief of War.
The new Resident Evil directed by Cregg grossed over $60 million in its opening weekend in North America alone, breaking multiple records.
Last year, Weapons grossed $42 million in its opening weekend in North America, setting a high benchmark for Cregg's future artistic and commercial career. Consequently, the new Resident Evil not only set Cregg's highest opening box office record to date (Barbarian grossed $10 million in its opening weekend in 2022), but also broke the series' highest opening weekend record.
Previous Resident Evil films typically performed well at the box office, enough to support subsequent releases, though their overseas earnings often played a significant role. For instance, the sixth installment, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, grossed only $26.8 million domestically in the US, but earned $285.4 million overseas. In other words, Cregg's new Resident Evil achieved double the total domestic box office of Paul W.S. Anderson's film in just its opening weekend.
Clearly, audiences were drawn to this new Resident Evil because they wanted to see a director they admire, such as Cregg, excel in a familiar franchise like Resident Evil. Debates over whether the film remained faithful to the original games did not hinder its box office performance; instead, those concerns proved entirely unfounded.
The film boasts a highly faithful adaptation of the game experience and is thoroughly engaging. Word-of-mouth, strong marketing, and rave reviews have successfully drawn audiences to theaters to watch this new Resident Evil. Moreover, the vast majority of viewers seem to be praising the film, suggesting it will continue to perform strongly at the box office in the coming weeks.
