2026 is shaping up to be a great year for horror movie news. This film is both one of the better Stephen King adaptations and one of the strangest (believe it or not), and now it seems that "1408" is finally making a comeback—20 years after its initial release. The news comes from Daniel Richtman's Patreon page, which also reveals that Mikael Håfström, the director of the first film ("The Rite"), is in talks to return to direct the sequel.
The fact that this project is now in development isn't entirely surprising, as John Cusack has expressed his desire to return to this story for years (he told People magazine that it was the only film for which he would do a sequel). Also unsurprising are the rumors that Cusack, who played writer Mike Enslin, and Samuel L. Jackson, who played Gerald Olin, will return to the project. Currently, there are no concrete plot details, nor even a tentative release date. However, there is much speculation about how this sequel will begin, since the original film was released with several different endings in various versions.
What can fans expect from the "1408" sequel?
It's really all guesswork at this point, as we know very few details beyond the actors' willingness and Håfström's return. To make matters worse, the film has multiple endings, leaving Everythinggj both puzzling and open-ended. Nevertheless, fans have proposed some ideas for how the story might begin, such as a prequel where Enslin never actually left the room, either trapped there forever or becoming a permanent guest in an endless loop; or perhaps a new guest takes center stage, with Enslin and Olin serving as guides, or even antagonists.
Although many fans of the original film are thrilled, some hold the opposite view, believing that the first movie was flawless and that a sequel would only repeat the cliché of sequels often being inferior to their predecessors—especially those released after so many years.
"Never make a sequel. It's already a near-perfect horror film; there's really no need for another one. At least don't bring back John Cusack's character; leave his fate ambiguous. Bring back Samuel L. Jackson to tell how the room fire released all the spirits, and now they're haunting the entire hotel. Or just make a completely different haunted room—but for God's sake, don't touch Cusack's character's fate again!" said one fan, perfectly summarizing the dissenters' sentiments.
While it's nice to see everyone so excited about a sequel, especially for such an eccentric film as "1408," I think its ambiguous ending wrapped things up perfectly. Do you want to see a sequel?
