Jailbroken PS5 Can Now Run Windows Steam Games Locally

PS5 jailbreak technology is making progress almost every week. Jailbroken PS5 consoles can now download Windows games from the Steam library and run them locally on the console without streaming from a PC.

The tool enabling this functionality is Playden for PS5, an alpha-version launcher developed by leolobato, ported from the macOS version of Playden. Users can log into Steam by scanning a QR code, browse their game library, download games, and then launch each game from independent tiles on the PS5 home screen.

It is built on prospero-win (a PS5 port of Wine), with graphics handling managed by DXVK. Unlike Linux on PS5, Playden does not require booting a separate operating system; instead, it runs as a standard PS5 application.

Development is progressing rapidly. The first public release was on October 12, and version 0.5.0 added support for Direct3D 12 through VKD3D-Proton. According to the release notes, this allowed games like Cyberpunk 2077 and Deep Rock Galactic to run.

Version 0.6.0, released this week, adds USB and FTP game import features, 120Hz output, and 4K resolution options. Of course, these features are still experimental. Many games on the compatibility list run properly, mostly older titles and indie games like Half-Life 2, Fallout: New Vegas, and Vampire Survivors, but many others crash or fail to launch.

Games with kernel-level anti-cheat mechanisms cannot run, and games requiring launchers like the EA app are currently unsupported. Developers have also warned that Steam login tokens are stored in unencrypted form on the console.

Two demos have recently appeared online: one is a video of Reddit user u/Cevap running Portal, and the other is @v7dt1 showcasing their full Steam game library on a PS5 via X. It is recommended that all users planning to try this back up their cloud saves first, as a bug may cause saves to be overwritten.
