Halo Studio Reportedly Planned 'Halo: First Strike' Game Before Layoffs

According to reports, 343 Industries had planned to develop a game adaptation of the novel Halo: First Strike, which bridges the storyline between Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 2. Recent leaks from the YouTube channel Rebs Gaming reveal that the project was originally planned to include at least five levels but was shelved due to studio layoffs before formal development began.

Rebs Gaming claims that after observing player community feedback on Halo: Campaign Evolved, 343 Industries began rethinking its approach to developing the franchise's expanded universe. It is reported that the studio previously underestimated player demand—players wanted to experience key storylines from the novels within the game itself, rather than having to read the source material to understand the complete lore.

According to sources from Rebs Gaming, 343 Industries' narrative team had proposed including content from the novel Halo: The Flood, an adaptation of the first game, as well as stories from other expanded universe materials, in Halo: Campaign Evolved. However, studio management at the time believed that most fans were either uninterested in the novels or indifferent toward them.

It is reported that this perception changed as the studio gradually revealed more details about Halo: Campaign Evolved and engaged deeply with the community. Players repeatedly asked whether the remake would include the storyline from The Flood, and the absence of novel-based content became a point of criticism among players.

It is reported that the next mainline Halo game is still some time away from entering full production, so 343 Industries began exploring how to leverage existing development assets from Halo: Campaign Evolved. Rebs Gaming states that DLC was one of the directions considered by the studio, allowing them to reuse existing assets while expanding the game's storyline.

It is reported that the studio discussed the adaptation potential of several novels, ultimately selecting First Strike as the primary project.

The novel's story takes place after the ending of the first game and before the beginning of Halo 2, making it an ideal narrative bridge between Halo: Campaign Evolved and the sequel's remake. According to Rebs Gaming, this adaptation was originally planned to include at least five levels, with some levels being two to three times longer than standard Halo campaign missions, and the final level featuring particularly substantial content.

According to leaks, the opening level will pick up right after the ending of Halo: Campaign Evolved: Master Chief rescues Linda from her cryo-chamber, then reunites with Johnson and other squad members before boarding a Pelican piloted by Keyes. The campaign will then follow Master Chief's battles against the Covenant, culminating in a final showdown at the Covenant space station "Unyielding Hierophant," which appears in the novel. At the story's conclusion, Master Chief will return to Earth, leading directly into the opening of Halo 2.

It is reported that this adaptation will not strictly follow all plot points from the novel. The development team aimed to focus the story on Master Chief's conflict with the Covenant, while incorporating exploration elements, collectibles, and terminal logs to encourage player exploration.

It is reported that 343 Industries also considered releasing the project as a standalone spin-off rather than as DLC. Rebs Gaming stated that feedback from those involved in the project assessment indicated that if the game lacked additional gameplay modes such as multiplayer and Firefight, it would be more reasonable to release it as a lower-priced DLC; however, if the content volume were expanded, a larger-scale standalone title could be considered.

The project could have also influenced the studio's long-term plans. Rebs Gaming claims that if the adaptation of First Strike had been successful, 343 Industries would have considered adapting more novels into games.
