EA Shuts Down Studio: Mass Effect Fans Launch Petition to Save the Series

Following publisher EA's announcement that it will shut down its developer BioWare, fans of the Mass Effect series are joining forces to sign a petition calling for the salvation of this classic game IP.

After EA officially announced the shutdown of developer BioWare and the cancellation of the next Mass Effect title, fans rallied behind the #SaveMassEffect initiative, urging EA to secure the future of the series. The initiative, posted on the public petition platform Change.org, points out that Mass Effect holds an irreplaceable place in the hearts of millions of players worldwide. Its immersive cosmic worldview and iconic, deeply resonant characters have created some of the most memorable narratives in the gaming industry.

The campaign calls on EA to provide BioWare with sufficient funding, staffing, and development time to support the studio in continuing the development of new entries in the Mass Effect series. If this is not feasible, it also requests that the publisher consider licensing the Mass Effect IP to other studios capable of carrying the series forward. Supporters of the petition believe that both approaches would preserve this classic series while expanding the boundaries of its universe through new stories and gameplay experiences. At the time of writing, the #SaveMassEffect petition has gathered over 105,000 signatures.

Content creator Dentix revealed in a recently released video that he was a member of the Mass Effect Advisory Committee, providing player feedback to BioWare during the development of Mass Effect 5. According to him, this new title, internally codenamed Mass Effect: Universe, is set more than six hundred years after the end of the Reaper War. Players will assume the role of a customizable N7 operative equipped with experimental cutting-edge technology, enabling gameplay mechanics such as hacking, environmental manipulation, and stealth combat.

The main storyline is not another alien invasion threatening the survival of the galaxy, but rather a power struggle among three major galactic factions: an alliance of humans, Krogans, and Batarians; the races belonging to the Citadel Council; and the Geth collective. The fragile balance of power between these three sides is quietly disrupted by a mysterious opponent lurking in the shadows. Meanwhile, a massive interstellar structure built by the Geth will open a channel between the Milky Way and the Andromeda galaxy, further expanding the series' narrative scope. Reportedly, the game's gameplay blends the meticulously designed levels of the original trilogy with the high-freedom playstyle of the Hitman series, allowing players to choose between investigative exploration, using the environment to outsmart enemies, or launching direct frontal assaults.
