Former BioWare Director Says EA Unlikely to Sell Mass Effect 5 Project or IP

Romain Toutain, former Technical Director of BioWare's Mass Effect series, believes it is unlikely that EA will sell the Mass Effect 5 project or the series IP to allow another team to complete the next installment. He emphasized that this judgment is based on his personal experience and does not mean EA has officially decided against selling.

During a Twitch livestream, Toutain responded to player questions by stating that EA typically does not sell its assets but instead shuts down related operations while retaining the licenses. He has served as the Technical Director for the Mass Effect series since early 2022. During the stream, he also viewed footage allegedly from Mass Effect 5, describing it as an internal trailer that was never intended for public release.

These comments come amid the closure of BioWare and the cancellation of Mass Effect 5. Former BioWare Executive Producer Mark Darrah previously analyzed that managers responsible for selling IPs might fear being held accountable if a project achieves massive commercial success under new ownership, making them reluctant to take the risk of selling.

However, Darrah also suggested that after assuming acquisition-related debts, EA might reconsider its large portfolio of dormant IPs. For Mass Effect and Dragon Age, the lack of ongoing development could either increase the likelihood of a sale or result in these IPs being shelved indefinitely.

Currently, the petition calling for the salvation of Mass Effect has reportedly garnered over 200,000 signatures, with Jennifer Hale and Mark Meer, the voice actors for Commander Shepard, publicly expressing their support.
