Arrowhead Game Studios is currently dedicating the majority of its resources to Helldivers 2, with about 95% of the team working on updates for the game. Only a small team at the studio is developing a prototype for the next title, but it has not yet been confirmed whether this project will become Helldivers 3.
Chief Creative Officer Johan Pilestedt stated that releasing a direct sequel would reset existing progress, forcing players to start from scratch while potentially splitting the still-active community between two products. Therefore, the team currently prefers to continue improving Helldivers 2, nurturing it into a game that players can engage with long-term.
Pilestedt also pointed out that if a standalone sequel is made in the future, the new title needs to be sufficiently distinct from the existing one so that both games can coexist. Otherwise, Helldivers 3's biggest competitor might just be Helldivers 2.
Although player numbers for Helldivers 2 have declined since their launch peak, the game maintains a healthy daily active user base. The game launched on PS5 and PC in 2024, followed by an Xbox Series X|S release; its PC and PS5 versions sold a combined 12 million copies within the first 12 weeks of launch. This statement does not permanently rule out a sequel, as Arrowhead is currently focusing its resources on the existing game and its player community.
