"BioShock" Movie Nears Progress, Netflix Management Changes Add Uncertainty

The film adaptation of BioShock is still moving forward. Director Francis Lawrence stated that the project has come "close" to becoming a reality, but recent management changes at Netflix have also introduced new uncertainties.

Netflix announced its push for the film in 2022, later confirming Lawrence as director. However, Lawrence has several other projects in hand, including an adaptation of Red Rising, so there is no guarantee that BioShock will be his next directed film. Producer Roy Lee previously confirmed that the movie will be based on the original game rather than its sequels.

Lawrence believes the core challenge of the adaptation lies in transforming the narrative driven by player participation into a traditional film format. The original protagonist, Jack, is nearly silent, and as players explore the underwater city of Rapture, they believe they are making active choices. This illusion of free will and choice is closely tied to key plot twists. The film will need to reshape the protagonist, and the original impact may be diminished when audiences watch others make these choices.

Hollywood has attempted to adapt BioShock several times over the past two decades. After Universal Pictures acquired the rights in 2008, Gore Verbinski and screenwriter John Logan pushed an R-rated version to within weeks of production before it stalled due to budget issues. Guillermo del Toro also pointed out that experiences such as puzzle-solving, piecing together information, and guided choices in the game are difficult to translate directly to film. The current version has not yet begun filming, and the project remains in development.
