Sunset Overdrive's Steam Deck compatibility status has been adjusted from "Unsupported" to "Playable." About 12 years after its 2014 release, this open-world action-adventure game can now run on the handheld, though it has not yet received the "Steam Deck Verified" rating.
It is currently unclear what specific content was fixed in the game, nor can we confirm who submitted or drove this rating change. "Playable" means the game may still have minor compatibility issues, and players will need to verify the actual performance of input, display, and other details themselves.
This change only affects the Steam version and does not indicate that the Xbox version has received new content updates. Sunset Overdrive was released by Insomniac Games in collaboration with Xbox and published by Xbox, with gameplay inspired by titles such as Jet Set Radio, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, and Prince of Persia.
Sunset Overdrive launched with Metacritic scores ranging from 81 to 83, and is currently priced at 74 yuan in the Steam China region. For players who already own the Steam version or wish to catch up via handheld, this rating adjustment provides a clearer signal of playability, although the game has not yet undergone full verification.
Detailed report from foreign media:
An Xbox game released by Insomniac Games in 2014 has just received a new update after 12 years. Insomniac Games made its debut in 1996 with the PS1 exclusive Disruptor, and later collaborated with Sony Computer Entertainment to develop the Spyro the Dragon series. In 2002, the two parties continued their partnership through the Ratchet & Clank series. Between 2002 and 2012, the studio worked on this iconic PlayStation series while also developing another PlayStation franchise, Resistance. From 2012 to 2016, it temporarily left the Sony camp before eventually returning to produce the reboot/remaster of Ratchet & Clank and Marvel's Spider-Man. After years of collaboration and close ties, PlayStation ultimately acquired the studio.
However, during its period away from Sony, Insomniac Games' most notable work came from its collaboration with Xbox. Some may have forgotten that in 2014, Insomniac Games partnered with PlayStation's rival, Xbox, to release Sunset Overdrive. Unfortunately for Xbox, although Sunset Overdrive attracted a dedicated fanbase, it was not Insomniac Games' peak achievement. It was one of the best Xbox games of the Xbox One generation, though that itself doesn't say much. Meanwhile, the series seems destined to remain dormant forever. Although PlayStation now owns the IP, the publishing rights for the first game are held by Xbox, and Insomniac Games has since shifted to larger, higher-quality projects—though apparently no one told that to Marvel's Wolverine. With that background out of the way, Sunset Overdrive recently received a small, unexpected update, but not for Xbox users; instead, it was for the game's Steam version.
Recent Steam reviews are "Very Positive"
Specifically, Sunset Overdrive was previously marked as "Unsupported" on Steam Deck, but its compatibility status has now been changed to "Playable." It still does not meet the "Steam Deck Verified" standard due to some minor compatibility issues. We are unclear about what prompted this update. It is also currently unknown what specific changes were made, or even who submitted this change. Presumably, it wasn't Insomniac Games, but it also doesn't seem like something Xbox would handle internally. Regardless, this is good news for Steam Deck users.
For those unfamiliar with the game, Sunset Overdrive is a new IP released by Insomniac Games and Xbox in 2014. It is an open-world action-adventure game inspired by titles such as Jet Set Radio, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, and Prince of Persia. Upon release, it received scores between 81 and 83 on Metacritic.
Although Sunset Overdrive launched with AAA pricing, 12 years have now passed. Therefore, players who want to experience the game on Steam Deck can now purchase it on Steam for just 74 yuan.
